still life
A collection of fruit in a shallow, wooden bowl. This is enough to inspire many an artist, but scientists want to poke and prod at things. A botanist might pick up the fruit and examine it more closely, to determine which variety it was. An anatomist would slice the fruit and put it under a microscope, so they could consider the different cell structures. A geneticist would pulverise a tissue sample to extract nucleic acids and compare them. Perhaps romance is the first casualty of science.
